Having opportunity to work for several arts organizations in my life has given me a firm understanding of why the arts are so important in society. I know because I've seen it in action. Working with other artists, we take for granted what motivates our work. We tend not to preach to other artists about the importance of what we do. We all get it.
But I've had alternate experiences, where people question why the arts should be subsidized or why it should be part of the public school curriculum and, therefore, a tax burden. Their argument was that we live in a system of free enterprise where the best products and services grow and the weak ones die out. Capitalist evolution. So they argue, "If we have millions of people buying tickets and CD's of all the pop genres, why not pay our respects and let the classical symphonies rest in peace?" and, "Why not have arts education offered as a club, outside the public school curriculum for those who choose to participate?"

That's why I'm posting this blog; I want to have the tools to present the case for supporting the arts at my fingertips, and if there's anyone else out there who could use this information, I hope this helps them as well. The monthly blogs will offer research results, quotes, case experiences, links to other advocacy sites, etc. If you have something to share, even if it's a dissenting opinion, please comment.
