All lessons and group classes will be online until further notice.
My name is Joseph Jansma and I am a Suzuki Cello instructor located on the northwest side of Ann Arbor. I teach private cello lessons year-round and hold weekly group classes during the fall and spring semesters. I am currently accepting new students.
While I specialize in instructing younger students, I work with students of all ages. I offer general lessons, music theory lessons, orchestral audition lessons, and college music school audition lessons. The basis of my teaching is that every student can learn to make music and that this is best fostered by breaking important goals into small more easily managed pieces that eventually come together. |

About the Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method is a complete musical training method that develops the physical and mental abilities of a student, and prepares them for a lifetime of music making and appreciation! The main tenets of the Suzuki Method are that music should be learned the same way we learn language as a child (aurally before visually), and that skill is built incrementally.
Typically, students begin Suzuki cello lessons between the ages of 3 and 8 (starting later is fine though!). Private lessons cover how to play the cello, strategies for learning, and learning repertoire. Group classes cover ensemble playing skills, strengthening memorization of polished pieces, and provides a space for students to see other students of different skill levels.
